i just got a 400 v8 from my father and I'm thinking about putting it into my ranger. its 2-wheel drive now but am converting it to 4x4 with the parts from an 89 ranger xlt 4x4. (same as my truck just 4x4 plus air conditioning.) I'm wondering if the motor will even fit and if so will my 5-speed bolt on to the v8? and what kind of axles should i go with to handle the power?

1- The engine will fit. But it will require some serious sawzall modifications.
2- No, your 5sp will not bolt to it. A C6 Automatic or a 4sp would be your best bet for a trans.
3- If your going to convert it to 4x4, i would use *atleast* F150 parts. A d44 front and a 9 inch rear, with a T case that will bolt to a fullsize tranny. A 400 makes enough torque to make Ranger parts snap like toothpicks.
4-The 400 is a strong running engine, and with a lil work can really be a torque monster.

later,
Dustin
