Heat Stove Thing

Upon re-assembly of my 89 2.9 ranger after a headgasket job, i found what looks like a "heat stove" (heat shield around passenger side exhuast manifold with a hose coming from it going into my airbox. sounds like a bunch of crap to me. if i remove it, will i still pass for emissions?
 
On my 2.8 it was used to bring warm air into my air filter to help the truck warm up when it was first started. I took mine off a month ago or so since my truck will now be considered an "antique" and I won't have to go through emissions again. It will run better without it, cool air is better, but It will affect emissions. But I don't know to what degree, even though it was on my 2.8 the valve on my air filter was closed so the hot air wasn't getting in and I passed my emissions every year. So I guess it depends on how strict ya'lls emissions are.

It is used to bring the intake are temp up, to help your truck warm up faster. Once your truck is warm, the intake switches to cold air from behind the headlight.

If your truck already warm when you take it to pass, it probably will. It will also depend on who is looking at it and what your laws are regarding modifying the intake.
 
Your truck will not run better without it. It's single purpose is to allow the truck to warm up faster. Once you're up to normal operating temp, you're pulling in air from the outside just like you would be if you disabled it. Removing it won't help you a bit, and in cold weather will only lengthen your frustration.
 
mines not been on there in over a year an ive had no problems with warm up start up or anything...
 
actually the purpose of it is to help the fuel evaporate better so that the engine will run more efficiently when its cold. you gain NOTHING by leaving it disconnected. there is a valve that closes this hot air off once the engine is warm

dead on toast coming out!!! do u want french fries dipped with tranny oil with that?? or a refreshing radiator coolant drink?
 
Removing it does nothing for performance, and in cold temps (REALLY COLD)
particularly running on current fuels that contain more alcohol (they are allowed to add up tpo 10% without telling you) it helps.

That all being said and humor aside there used to be a Cookbook
on "manifold cookery" Food that you'd wrap in foil and leave it on
your engine to cook as you drove.

Nothing like Manifold Meatload and engine baked potato at a highway rest stop:)
