04 4.0 swap

I've used this sights reaserce to help with my 4.0 sawp in my 86 ranger. I have a spare 93 4.0/auto and harness that a buddy wants to swap into his 04 mazda/ranger to replace the 2.3/5spd. not certain of aLL the required parts for such a new rig. The forums and info page don't really touch on it. Any help is welcome. :shok:

Uh, I wouldn't touch that with a 20 foot pole if I was him... First it would be illegal, secondly the wiring pain would be soo much trouble... You'll need to look for a 4.0L SOHC ('01-up I believe)...

the illegal part is because the motor is older than the truck sand epa rules say same year or newer right? that means a V8 is the same deal too? parts of oregon are pretty lax on checking but should he ever try to sell it, ouch. :icon_cheers:

Illegal because it is older and I highly doubt you'd get a '93 4.0L to pass as an '04 during smog...

^^Agreed on the later part! but sorry bucko, but in Oregon, it's a-okay as long as it meets emissions requirements via the DEQ and the original engine spec. BUT....you are gonna run into a major wiring headache getting that engine to run, getting all related items such as the PCM working correctly. I've got a '01 4.0L for sale in SE Portland....complete with wiring harness....
