OK so to Recap the begining I was driving my '89 BII home from work when the engine just flat out died and wouldn't restart, I originally assumed that it was the fuel pump, after digging into it I found there to be the correct PSI at the fuel rail so ruled out the pump. After trying to turn it over I got it to run with about half throttle and once you let it idle down it died not tonight I put in a new cap, rotor and plugs and now I can't get it to idle at all. The old plugs are saturated with fuel and were bad in the first place the old cap was worn out. Whats are my options next as I am getting frusterated as all hell. It is almost like the wires are on wrong but I double checked all the locations and their connections. HELP PLEASE. Thanks guys:icon_confused:

go to the tech library and read up on TFI that might be it

I second a checking of the TFI.

When you try to crank it, do you have spark at the plugs?

Also, did you pull the codes?

my 2.9 had something of the same problem, for me it would start in while the key was in the start position the when rock the key back to the run position it would not idle/run.

we replaced lots of stuff, I too start at the fuel system and ruled that out new cap wires all that, even the ignition module. turns out it was the distributer, the magnetic switch was bad. got a wrecking yard Distributer for 35$ rebuilts are around 70$ after exchange.

Don't know if we have the same problem perhalps it will help Good luck

Thanks for the TFI suggestion that really sounds like it could be the winner, I'll be checking that soon, thanks again guys

Hey all, here is the update, I put in a new TFI module and it started but idled rough so I tried pulling the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator and it idled a little better and ran smooth off idle then I let out the clutch and the engine died!! So I restarted it and let the clutch out it again died. What would cause the engine to die when releasing the clutch pedal?
