and another question. i found a 2002 trans for a ranger that came off a v6, will that bolt up the same?

IIRC the bell housing for the 4 cyl is not the same pattern as the v6 of any flavor. and I belive the 3.0 and 4.0 are also different. the 2.8- 2.9 are (again i belive ) the same as the 4.0. this is all info from memory, from about 5 years ago, on a previous incarnation of TRS.

Any pre- 4.0 years for sure.so I'd guess 84 to 89? i don't think the first year offerd a v6, could be wrong tho'. and the 3.0 was offered as an optional motor at the same time.

The first year of the v-6 was very late 83. I'm having the same problem trying to put a four banger tranny on a 2.8 liter but im putting a 2.8 bellhousing on the tranny to make it work.

so if i find a 83 to 89 trans form a 2.8 or 2.9 it will bolt to my 4.0????

i found this posting for a trans for sale"M5R1. This trans should fit Ford Ranger,Explorer,Bronco 2 1988 to 1994 with a 3.0L engine4x4"
will this fit in a 96 with a 4.0?????

You never even said if you have an automatic or manual trans...:icon_confused:

2.8, 2.9, 4.0 all have the same bellhousing pattern

3.0 has it's own pattern

4 cyls from 83-mid-2001 has it's own pattern

4 cyls mid-2001+ has its own pattern.
(That really, really, REALLY needs to be stickied in this forum)

Manual transmissions from about 1989-90+ is the Mazda M5OD for all engines. The bellhousing is not removable so you need the correct one for your engine. Just about all 2.8s and 2.9s are too old for the M5OD and they have weaker crap trans that you don't want anyway.

Now, assuming we're talking automatics: you need a 1995+ trans from a 4.0 (4r55e is what your 96 truck would have, a later 5r55e I'm almost positive would work too) Autos behind 3.0s and 4 cyls are the weaker 4r44e and 5r44e which you don't want, and 1994 and older autos are the A4LD which is NOT electronically controlled like yours is so it will not work.

Keep in mind, an M50D from a 2.9 will hold up. The FM145/146 will not last behind a 4.0. In other words, I wouldn't bother looking pre 89.. I think the 2.9 4x4's used the FM146 through 92 IIRC... M50D's are cheap and abroad.
