You need to figure if it is leaking oil, brake fluid, or ATF. If it is oil, it is an engine seal. If it is brake fluid, it is the slave cylinder. If it is ATF, then it is a transmission seal.

Actually the 88 manual tran would leak gear oil, not ATF:)

i think it may be brake fluid. cause the clutch wore down pretty quick in the past week or so. dammit.:annoyed: where would it leak from?
but also the trans makes noise like it has low gear oil. so i dont know what it is......:annoyed:
i wanna drive it again soon. i refuse to drive it now until i get it fixed. luckily i got my chebby to drive while i fix it

Oh..the "88" trans...and which one would that be exactly? :annoyed:

We would need to know which one it is, before reccomending fluid type.

If it is Brake Fluid, then your Slave Cylinder is leaking. Is the level in the reservoir going down at all?

did they use atf in one of them? cause when i did the auto to manual swap in my 87, every ranger I looked at at the yard, from 83 thru 88, had a manual with gear oil not ATF.

its a 5spd manual 4x4 tranny. it smells like gear fluid. it looks to be coming out of the bellhousing and the pan area

What's normal? It will leak when the gaskets decide it's time. Mostly decided by time and conditions. the older a gasket, the more likely it is to be able to leak.

And when i wen't looking all the M5OD's were in the "we only have the newer, fancier cars" boneyards, so I only saw the FM's and TK's (which was what I got) cause i'm too cheap... thanks for the info tho' it'll keep me from killing a trans at some point in the future.

normal to me is not holding back much(i dont pop the clutch all the time only on accident).
where can i find the gaskets for the trans "pan" and the front one by the bellhousing?
would it also be good to replace the clutch while im at it? im prolly going to get a dual friction clutch
