My neighbor has an 04 which has a broken gear(s) in the rear. she just want's it running so she can trade it in. I figure the cheapest fix is a trip to the junkyard. so which years fit? and do i need to watch for gearing differences?

Far as I know....there's only one IRS axle out there on Expos....and it's the 8.8. Boy oh boy this is gonna get spendy. lol.

What's exactly broken? Would probably be cheaper to have new gears installed in the current differential.

Not sure what broke, I walked up while a friend of hers was checking it. I'll ask her for details and check it out myself asap.
I still think going to the u-pullit will be cheaper than new gears.

There ARE different ratios

What exactly does it have wrong with it?

It's useful to know before going hunting for a used Diff Chunk...

Good luck finding an IRS expo at the upullit...

Not sure what's wrong. from her discription I'm thinking that the gears on the pass side gave. clicking for a long while, then no ability to accelerate, and the pass axle moves in and out. we're gonna open the pumpkin to have a look-see. and yeah I'm not gonna hold my breath that the u-pull-it will have something 2002, or newer, but sometimes you get lucky.

I may have to classify myself an idiot.:icon_twisted: is the inner flex joint on this rear similar to a C/V joint? I just too a good look under there and saw a boot.
If my guess is right then this is the first suspect. cause the symptoms she described to me are what my old escort did when the c/v went bad.

I would guess it is bad a CV as well, especially with the 'clicking' noise.
