So on my way back home yesterday(lexington to virginia beach 230 miles) I was almost home when my auto trans in my 94 started slipping I was stuck in traffic on the bridge(only about 30 miles away from home) At first while i was just idleing along the truck gave a pop like it shifted really bad but i shoulda only been in first. and then a little after that i went to accelerate but didnt go anywhere and that happened a few times. Then i had to go up another bridge when the truck started smoking pretty bad so i pulled into the first place i could and checked my fluid level almost bone dry.

my parents came with some more but when we turned it on and went to gear it had a steady stream. we dont have an official word from where but it looked like the main seal.

This was the trucks first time in the mountains in a loonngg time it just rolled over 75000 miles on the way home also.

do think its fixable

rebuild 2000

manual swap 4000 (for them to do it) cost more than truck

get new truck

I'd check the vent line on the trans

when the A4LD gets hot after say... a long run in july heat followed by some slow traffic?

AND the vent line is plugged (Mud Dauber wasps just love the upper end of the vent line)

the trans will puke it's fluid through the torque converter seal.

Sometimes the seal survives the event, and the trans will work after cooling down
Presuming it get doesn't get itself pushed out of the pump cover...

what happens if you pay $600 to replace the seal and it still needs rebuilding?

then i wasted $600
so start out taking allan's recommendations which you can do for nearly free... then drive it and see what happens. worst case is you're back to square one and have to decide if youre gonna rebuild it or replace it anyways.

I had a 1987 Plymouth Caravelle and the transmission was slipping in and out of gear pretty bad, with 200 000km on the car it wasn't worth replacing the transmission, so i pulled the pan, replaced the filter, and filled it with Lucas transmission fix, It lasted me about 40 000km more, then I sold it to a guy i worked with and he drove it for about 30 000km on top of that, all without any problems. Worth a try and it cost me about $60
