I have a 1987 2.9L v6. It's never been rebuilt, it has 175,### miles on it. Right now i could purchase a 302. Should I rebuild the v6 or purchase the v8. And would the v8 be worth all the converting over?

Does the V6 need to be rebuilt?

Have you done a compression test? Find out what's going on with the 2.9 before you make this kind of decision.

I think that depends if you are satisfied with the 2.9 or want more power/torq that you would get from the 302. I am getting ready to build a 331 efi stroker for my 90 ranger. I also had the 2.9 and have always been disapointed with the performance of the 2.9 (need more power!) the 302 swap can get costly and time consuming from what I have found out so far.

Your gonna need a trans/t-case change also, add more $$$$.
You can use your t-case with the C-4 with a C-5 output, but you have to go thru the whole trans. to change it out.May as well rebuild the c-4 you just bought..........$$$$$
I am not trying to discourage you but there's a little more to it than getting the 302.

Figure out why the 2.9 isnt running right.

175,000 isnt anything for one.

Probely a fuel filter or something dumb like that.

.....4.11 gears and a 5sp (if you have an auto) would do wonders to that 2.9.

Obviously it wont run as hard as a 302, unless you were to shoot it with the bottle, but by the time you go through the hassles of a 302 (espically if you run EFI, which id advise against) you could have a 351 that would blow the doors off the 302.

Dustin
