bad leak on 5 speed

i drive a 1993 ranger with a 4.0 and a 5 speed manual, it leaks at them end of the trans where it meets the transfer case, it leaks pretty bad..enough to make me think its almost dry of fluid, i put some kind lube that stops leaks but it didnt help..what is wrong and what action should i take to fix this?

Stop driving it. You will burn it up and it ain't pretty.

There are three rubber plugs (http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/0/059/article/_M5OD_Mazda_Design_Manual_Five_Speed_Transmission_ Preventative_Measure.html) behind the shifter cover that are prone to failure. They might be leaking making the fluid run down. It's common and the fix is to take them out and drive in expansion plugs.

You can see the plugs on this 2wd tranny--your t-case adapter replaces the cone over the output shaft.

I beliave there is a seal on the bearing on the output shaft of those trans/case combos to keep fluid from getting into the adapter that is between the case and trans. That seal may have gone bad, or it may just be an issue of dropping the t-case and re-sealing the surfaces where it is leaking. I had a truck that had that seal that was on the rear bearing in the trans that did the same thing(not a Ford). Was a pretty easy fix.

Please keep stuff that is designed to stop leaks out of Transmissions, Transfer cases, motors, and rear-ends. That crap has caused a couple of friends a lot of money.

i rip up the floor to see the trans and noticed that it is leaking out of those rubber seals, thanks

whats the best way i go about purchasing these rubber seals because i dont think that the guys down at auto zone have sucha part

I replaced mine with the Dorman metal plugs. It was actually a quick and easy job:
