does a 4.0 fit on a 2.9 5 speed


Yes, but it's a FM145 or FM146, the 4.0 will destroy it.
 
Are you asking if the trans' will bolt up? The answer is yes, 2.9/4.0 share the same bolt patterns. But if your 2.9 has the FM145 behind it, then it wouldn't last long. However it indeed has the M50D behind it, you'd probably be ok.
