On the drivers side of the a4ld there is the piece that shifts. Well apparently this is the last problem I've run into during my transmission swap (87 ranger a4ld, to 89 bronco 2 a4ld). My linkage is set-up for a knob maleend to mate with a female end on the transmission. The new a4ld is set-up for a female end to mate with a male end. How do I remove the outer shifting lever to swap them? I found a nut for it under the pan, but it looks like it can't be removed. Should I pull the next piece? Those 20 or so 10mm bolts?

That one is easy... First, get a wrench on the nut inside the trans.

Next, break it loose but don't remove it.

Next, in the rail that the pan bolts to, it a pin... grab it with a pair of good diagonal side cutters and pry it almost all the way out.

Now, remove the nut completely and remove the shifter making note of the "Z" link.

Assembly is reverse of removal. I removed the valve body on mine but I'm quite sure removal is not necessary.

Awesome, thanks for including pictures. I knew it had some sort of lockpin or something but I overlooked that. =)
