My clutch is chattering so I thought I'd have a look underneath. It appears I'm missing one of the bottom bolts that holds the bellhousing to the engine. I'll pick one up tomorrow.

Could this be my source of the chatter? The tranny mount looked good. Anything else that I should check?

The clutch holds fine but is not very smooth to engage.

what engine? what year? is all of the other hardware tight?

Ooops.

2000 4.0OHV 4x4 5spd.

Everything else looked good. Would the 1 missing bolt result in that? I haven't checked the torque on them. Those top bolts don't look easy to get to check.

one missing wouldnt cause a problem. i suspect that if one is missing though, the others could be loose. on that engine i think there's 8.

How would you access the 2 top bolts? I can't even see them or get my hands in there to even feel them!

And I'm leaving for a 1 week road trip as well in 2 days!

a really really long extension with a swivel is the best way. others claim to have luck with a box end wrench, going in from under the hood.

I've always got mine top ones out from the under the hood like kunar said.

i always get to mine when i have te cross member out and the trans hangs down. i then use a long extension,a wobbly, and a 13mm socket. the chattering could be caused be a heat checked flywheel caused by riding the clutch or it is oil on the flywheel, take the inspection plug out of the bellhousing and spray brake cleaner up by the clutch disc while the engine is running,it will be a temp fix but you will know the problem area,if it works then change the clutch, and turn the flywheel and change the rear main seal .
