91 Explorer no 5th or reverse

I have a 91 explorer 4x4 4.0l which i purchased of a buddy cheap because of transmission issues, the issues are that there are that it wont go into 5th or reverse and this is due to the fact that he accidently went from 3rd to reverse (which i never thought possible but there are witness accounts), long story short i took it to a shop they wanted about 1400 to fix it, 750 for tranny and rest labour, and they didt say what exactly was wrong just a new tranny is cheaper than the parts. I am wondering if i would be able to rebuild it myself cheaper than 550 which is the price of a tranny through a relitave when they go for 800 aparently, or through the pick n pull 90 bucks if i can find one out of a bronco 2. any info is appreciated

if you have the ability, get one at the pick and pull. for that price you may or may not want to rebuild it. if it dies, just get another. rebuilding takes some special measuring tools that you may not have.

I the input shatf of a m5o0d-r1 from a 2.9 different than one from a 4.0

i just bought a ranger with no reverse or fifth.... took off the shift boot and the top of the tranny and the sinkro's(dont know how to spell) were off, all i did was put them back into place with a screw driver and tapped it with a hammer. good to go now!

Then, they will come off again. They didn't slide off because an evil wizard put a hex on them.
