I'm about to purchase a '97 4.0L 4wd ext cab 5sp ranger. Problem is that it is difficult to get into gear when stopped, engine running. When moving it shifts fine. Engine stopped, it shifts fine. Guy i'm buying it from assumed it was the clutch slave, and replaced it, but the problem is still there. I asked him about the condition of the PP, clutch, TO bearing, etc, but it seemed like he was sick of dealing with it, and didn't really check out the other stuff. I'm hoping that it's the master cylinder, as this seems like the easiest repair, but I'm going to want him to knock down the price a bit if it's going to involve dropping the tranny again. Questions:
1. Seems like this is hydraulic related, but I guess it could be TO bearing, clutch/PP. Anything else? Any chance this is an actual tranny problem?
2. Any way to test, short of replacing MC?
