Is an '87 supposed to have a CEL? I have the space for one, but the circuitry on the back of the instrument cluster has never been cut open to accept a bulb. Is this factory original and doesn't use a CEL? Or maybe a swapped cluster?

i had the same question a while ago and ended up pulling clusters out of 5 other 87s' at a junk yard and all of the had the spot for the cel but like you said the circuitry wasn't cut open. so i tried to cut it open and put a bulb in and nothing happened. so assume they had the spot for the light but decided not to use it.

That's correct - they're set up to be able to have one but the wiring is not in place to connect them. At one time there was a tech article by MAKG explaining an easy process to enable it. I suspect that if you look at the article describing how to run the test with a voltmeter or test light (not just a paperclip) you could see how the wiring would need to be connected to make the CEL come on properly.
