So today. I loaded up a bike jump, and was taking my brother and some friends down to the river in my Ranger. I was slowing down to stop at a stop sign. And my truck freaked out. The steering locked. The brakes were pushing so hard against me that I had to stand up to stop the truck. All of my dash lights were blinking. The batter light, the check engine light, door ajar, check gage, etc. I had to throw it in park. And turn it off. Then turn it right back on again.

And it worked. But now everything just feels a little shakey. Or maybe its just me. But I stopped at Aamco to see what they thought (they have a free check engine light scan), and they have no idea.

Anyone?? Its NOT my belt. Because I put another twenty miles on it today and it was okay. But its freakin me out. I just put 2000$ into this truck. And I'm leavin to go to Alaska for six weeks next thursday. I need to have this fixed asap so my brother can use it to get to work and back while i'm gone.

Any help?!?!?

Check the battery connections and the ground straps. And don't just look at them. Disconnect them and clean them up.

Losing power steering and vacuum assist brakes means your engine died on you for whatever reason. Might have been a hickup, poor/loose grounds, poor +5V connection or loose. Maybe an intermittant hickup in the ECU.

Hard to say for sure with no codes.

Do you have an auto or a manual tranny? Reason I ask is even if you lost electrical to the engine, the manual would keep the engine and accessories spinning to provide steering. It may still even provide vacuum

I truly hope you have an auto....

Um evanesce69, he said he "had to throw it in park", i don't know of ANY manual with park.

oopsie.....

:icon_twisted: OH....... (dramatic pause) ...... so he did say that...... :icon_twisted:

I missed that part, but my deduction still fits. He wouldn't have lost the items in question had he a manual.

I remember along time ago driving my dads Lincoln. It was a 460 with a carb that had a faulty choke. If you turned a corner too quick the choke would engage and kill the engine. When that happened, it did the same as HallzyBallzy's truck did. It was truly scary at 16 when you are staring down a semi in the other lane.

I'm alive today so all was well, but I had to change my drawers..... LOL

Yup it's an auto. Yeah it was definitely scary. And I'm leaving to Alaska in a few days. So it will be my little brothers for two months. And the only thing I want him worrying about is fillin up the gas tank!

Okay. So check the battery connections and ground straps. The groundstraps on either side of my frame??

Thanks guys!

Alsooo. Last night I was driving it. And it did the same thing. I had already stopped. And was like gez, my engine sure is quiet compared to my dad's. And I looked down. And it shut down, and all the gauges were blinking again. Steering locked, brakes locked. But I turned it off and on. And it worked again.

Just a thought, but do you have a security system on that vehicle?

No I don't. Why?
It blinks "theft" when it's off. But its just a fake thing ha.

Also. I checked my grounds, they were fine. I tightened by battery cables also. I hope that makes the difference.

well if it is a ligit security system, it may be malfunctioning.

Sounds like a malfunctioning security system to me. I would get it checked to see if it has one on it. My grandma had a security system on her car when she got it (used) but had no way of activating/deactivating it and got it taken off immedietly.

Did you check for the infamous "P0401" code, and bad DPFE? That's how mine acted when it was bad... except I have manual trans so less drama with the accy's...

Maybe AAMCO (aka Rip-Off Artists) only look for tranny codes???
