I'm currently in the process of installing a lift on my 91 Ranger with replacement rear springs. The rear shackles and hangers were damaged, so they have been replaced.

However I would like to replace the shackle bolts themselves. The ones that are OEM are M14x2.0x110 flange bolts. The only replacement bolts I can find locally in that size have a property characteristic of 8.8 (essentially a grade 5). This concerns me a bit. What do you guys think?

Or, should I just run some 1/2"x4 1/2" grade 8 bolts and forget the handy nuts with the tang on them to keep them from turning?

Thanks for reading.

the local autoparts store should have u bolts for like 20 bucks for the set.. they work for an 8.8 or 7.5 the explorer 8.8 they will not.

He's lookin for hanger-spring bolts, not U bolts. I have chevy leafs, but don't remember having to open up the holes in my stock hangers and I had to use 9/16" bolts as 1/2" were a sloppy fit. I picked them up from the spring shop across from my work, along with the hardened washers for something like $18.

I'd just go with the 9/16" grade 8 bolts. Think you ought be to able to find the flange nuts with locking threads. Loc-tite very good also.

Thanks for the replies. If a 9/16" bolt will fit that is what I will probably do. I just didn't have one around to check. I will try that after work. Thanks again.

Well just doing the math, a 14mm bolt is .551", a 9/16" would be .562", sure ought to fit.

I used 9/16" bolts on mine, they fit perfect.

I made my own "tang nuts" (there's a proper name for them, I forget what it is though) by welding a piece of 3/4" x 1/8" steel strip about 3" long to the side of each nut.

The chevy leafs have the same size hole in the bushing.

Yup 9/16" is a lot cheaper and fit just fine.

Right on guys, I put some 9/16" bolts in there and they fit perfect. Thanks. I was thinking of adding tangs to the nuts also. It would probably be a good idea since I'm already putting all this work into it.
