I currently drive a 1986 Ranger, 2wd, 4 cylinder, 5 spd manual.
The power steering pump had to be placed due to age, however
now the new one is leaking. Is this a common trait?
With the same truck it seems to have no guts when it comes to
take off. Seems to stall at random times, and at least take three
cranks of the key for it to start. Is this also a common problem?

Next, I just recently purchased a 1987 Ranger, 2wd, 4 cyl, Auto.
Great looking truck, no body wear except for the tailgate. The
strange thing with it is the fact that the transmission, no matter
what gear its in, park, neutral, or even reverse, it wants to go'
forward.

Does anyone have any advice on any of these problems? Your help
would be gladly appreciated.

Couldn't tell you much about the power steering on these little trucks. Mine doesn't have it. I don't remember anyone on this web site complaining about them having a short life. Any idea how old the pump was? I doubt that it will be a continuing problem.

If it's stalling and hard to start, it might just need a tune-up or carb adjustment. Unless it's EFI. Then maybe you've got some clogged injectors. Any recent maintenance on the fuel system, plugs, wires, distributor, etc????

If you're saying that you can't shift out of "Drive", then you hopefully just have a problem with your shift linkage. Otherwise, it's something inside your tranny, and way over my head.

Well I had replaced the plug wires and cap recently. I have used some fuel injector cleaner on the '86 and seems to really have no effect.

If you haven't checked the plugs lately, I would do that also. And make sure that you got those plug wires on tight. They can fool you sometimes.

Fuel Filter? PCV valve?

How about your Check Eng Light? Any codes?

Sorry about all the questions, but there are a lot of guys here with a lot of good information. (Not necessarily me.) But they'll need to know as much about your truck and your problem as possible.
