I have decided that my head gasket is bad in my 94 ranger with the 4.0L and was going to tear into it this weekenda and have the heads checked and milled if needed. I was wondering if I should do things like replace the timing belt and / or water pump as some good insurance while I already have the thing torn apart. it has 124,xxx miles on it rite now. What do you think?

i dont own a 4.0L but i recently replaced head gaskets and rebuild heads on my 93 3.0L. it had 188K and didn't really need the timing chain, but the water pump was ate up. it's cheap and totally your call. I chose to do both because of the amount of disassembly needed to get to the parts in question if i waited till later. Cheap insurance in my mind. Oh yeah, i replaced the front seal as well.

There is no timing belt, it's a timing chain. You also need to replace the head bolts when you do the head, it's not included with most head sets. Cheap insurance woud also be to replace to the thermostat.

the thermostats easy to do without the engine torn apart. just replaced the valve gaskets in my buddies 94 nd did the thermostat after it was back together jsut fine.

Rear main seal, oil pan gasket and oil pump all are easily done with the engine out. So if you have any reservations about these items, now is the time to replace 'em.

Water pump is easy enough to do with the engine in place. But, your call.

I never said I was pulling it out they came out just fine with the engine still in.....
