Valvoline SynPower for the 4.0 SOHC?

Hey guys, I've been reading alot about Valvoline's new 300,000 mile engine guarantee through the use of their SynPower Synthetic oil. The claim is legitimate and you can enroll through their website as long as your car has 75,000 miles or less on the clock.

My 06 4.0 SOHC Ranger is about to tick to 75,000 miles, and I am strongly thinking about switching it over to full-synthetic, to take advantage of their guarantee.

I know full well that engines have no problem going 200+ on conventional oil. But with manufacturers now designing engines to run on synthetic, what do you think of this? I am running Valvoline 5W30 in her right now.

It seems that Valvoline wouldn't offer this guarantee to promote their SynPower oil if it was bogus. I've been on bobistheoilguy.com and they seem to like this SynPower for the HP and MPG gains. He also says that SynPower is 4 times the amount of wear protection as Mobil 1 Full Synthetic.

Should I switch?? You guys always give good advice...

I'm sure it's a very good oil, and you have nothing to lose by switching.

As far as the guarantee, Valvoline knows that very, very few people will ever even file a claim for a new engine, because:

1) The truck will not make it that long due to either being wrecked/sold/traded/etc.

2) The owner will not be able to produce the necessary documentation or will not be covered under the many exclusions listed on Valvoline's website.

I don't think it's a scam, but Valvoline's financial liability is negligible. As I said before I'm sure it's a very good oil.

I use conventional oil (of every brand) in my '94 4.0 and it's at 207,000 miles. The main thing is simply keeping it changed.

Going with a full synthetic is always a good move, new or old. But keep something in mind about their warrenty - or anyone's. Like a mail in rebate, manufacturers count on the public's lazyness in following up with a claim. They know that this is an advertising "hook" to get you to purchase their product, knowing that if a hundred people's engines went t*ts up, maybe two or three would bother to file a claim. Valvoline is a decent oil, no doubt, but no better than some others. Luck to you.

It's a good oil, but I wouldn't buy for the warranty. It has so many loopholes and exclusions, it doesn't even really cover anything. First off, it obviously only covers the engine. If the engine has some problem not related to the oil, like an electrical problem, bad gasket, overheating, etc it's not covered. If the oil leaked out and the engine is destroyed because of that, it's not covered. The warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear (worn rings, valve guides etc). If you neglect oil changes and the engine fails, it's not covered.

So...what else is left? There really isn't any other possible way the engine could fail.
