I am working on an 88 ranger 4x4 with 2.9 and 5sp. The tag on the tranny shows that it is an FM146 which I believe is made by Mitsubishi. Just wanted to confirm that the FM146 used standard 80-90W gear oil. I have called two Ford dealerships in my area and they both said ATF, but did not have any documention that went back to 1988. The owners manual calls for 80W-85 gear oil, but I just want to confirm what others are using.

Thanks

You are correct.

The Ford dealers you talked to don't know what they're talking about. The Mazda (M5OD-R1) trannies used ATF, which is the more common transmission in the Rangers.

The Mitsubishi (FM146) uses 80W90.
