Can the FM146 transmission bolt up to the 4.0 engine?

Yes it's the same bellhousing as the 2.9L. However, the difference in power from a 2.9L to a 4.0L might kill it. If you're going to be swapping in a FM146, I'd just get an M5OD from an Explorer. It's a much stronger tranny and will also bolt up to the 4.0L.

My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
bad idea, don't do it.

If you baby it, it may last a while but be on the look out for an M5OD.

as a second vehicle or a trail truck, it would probably be okay for a while. i wouldnt depend on it as a daily driver though.
