ok iv bin looking around the tranny forum for awile and i thought i had a parts truck for a manual swap but the guy wants a outragous amount for a rotted truck sitting in the busch so i might fix my auto. my trucks a 1988 ranger 4x4 auto and the tranny will over heet after i drive it for about 60 miles and it will spray oil out the seal and it leeks a little bit to. i no these arnt reliable trannys but its expensive to buy a new one and i cant find a replacement anywhere. so want to try replacing the seal or gasket in this and see if this is my problem, is there anything else that would make my tranny spray oil out and over heat? this only happined to me when i was towing a load of fire wood but i felt the truck should have been able to hall it. if i put a new gasket in should it be good to rolll ? or is it something internally? thanks:sad:

I am just finishing rebuilding mine.
Just have to install it on Saturday and find out how I did.
Wasn't that hard to do.
I did a lot of research and think it is going to work just fine.

I wonder how many other owners have tried rebuilding a A4LD?

I've gotta write up a tech article on these beasties one day........................

The #1 reason that A4Ld's spew ATF out the front is that the converter bushing wears out. #2 reason is the old style "grey" seal which is stock Ford. Should use the black aftermarket style.

To change the bushing requires removing and dissassemble the pump assy. The rub is that the pump needs special tools to re-align the pump halves. You CANNOT get close enough without them. Also, if the seal is leaking, chances are the trans needs more attention further inside.

You can not just change that converter bushing.
you need to send your bell housing out to one of two places in the country and have one machined in place.

The transmission shop I bought my parts from aligned my pump for free.

did some flow mods there also

Really? You mean to tell me that I've been doing it wrong for the past 15 years?? Wow, do I feel stupid.:bsflag:

Finished installing my overhauled transmission ( I built it) and so far it is working good.

A quick look into the one I pulled out and number 3 thrust washer was chewed up ... been driving it like that since 2004 ... no 4th gear
