check oil light coming on frequently

it seems like my check oil light is coming on pretty frequently, even after recent oil changes, and so i was wondering if anyone knows what conditions trigger the check oil light to come on. every time i check, i have the right amount oil, but a while back i did an oil change, and the oil smelled strongly of gasoline. could gasoline mixing with the oil cause a check oil light to come on ?

Oil will smell like gas if most of your driving consists of short trips. When you first start the engine, the computer makes it run rich, much like a choke on a carb. So if you're doing lots of short trips, the engine is never really getting warmed up and is always running rich. Some this extra fuel winds up in the oil. It will not however, cause the check oil light to come on. You probably have a bad sender.
