Which is not a bad thing, the M5OD is probably the best trans ever to be put into a Ranger. Just make sure it always has fluid in it (a common place for leakage (leading to failure) is the shift rail plugs on the end of the top cover).
There is one other tranny that will fit however, the A4LD automatic (from a 3.0L). You really don't want this trans, it's not known for it's reliability.

it's not like i want to change it for the heck of it, i was just wondering if there were any good alternatives. switching to auto is not even close to an alternative, i'd rather sell my truck for $450 before trying that!
soo... my mechanic talks about doing syncros as being easy, maybe to him, some people say i might as well rebuild the whole thing?
btw for an update as to all the crazy stuff that was going on with my trans, all that's really happening right now when i drive it is that i will every once in a while not be able to get into gear, then after trying a few times while pumping the clutch i hear a little 'whirr' and it shifts in no problem.
i never actually got anybody to drop the trans, everyone who has driven & heard it has simply said they needed to drop it and look.

Find a junkyard unit with low mileage, preferably from a newer truck. It's cheaper.. Syncros are rather easy... You have to pump the clutch to get in gear sometimes? Weak slave maybe, or a sticky pilot bearing, or even possible air is trapped in the hydraulic system.. Syncro's pick a gear at a time, they all don't go at once. Also, what gears are you having trouble getting into?

i dunno, i only try like 1 and 2 and i tried 3 this time, same thing. the first time, when my mechanic came to the scene, he had to shift it into reverse real hard and it made grinding noise like a mofo when he did. i guess i'll give a look at possibly bleeding it out. i have read how it's done like a hundred times and still not sure what i'm supposed to do, i'll have to ask my mechanic.
