Not sure where this post should go.

I have a 2001 Ranger with the 4L V6 and 5sp manual trans. I have been noticing a low pitched whine or possible roaring at 2000RPM. It seems to be consistent in all gears (not sure about reverse). It seems the same no matter what speed I am traveling at. It does not occur by just revving the engine so that tells me it is something in the drivetrain. I replaced the the clutch and flywheel about a week ago and it seems to have just made the noise more noticable (not louder, just seems like things are better coupled now, hence providing more feedback). It reminds me of the sound of the engine when it is under really heavy load (pulling a motorcycle trailer), but it seems to have plenty of power and tourque. I am at a loss as to where this noise may be coming from in the drivetrain. Any suggestions?

I've noticed the same thing in my own 4.0, except mine is an auto. My dad noticed it too and thought it sounded weird, however I just assumed it was just normal engine noise. It does sound like a roaring noise right at 2000-2400 rpm.. I noticed that the OHV 4.0 makes peak torque (220 lb/ft) at 2400.. so maybe this is an indicator that the engine is really working or something?

Maybe someone else can share their experience, we can't be the only one's with this noise.

Oh, and my truck only has about 60,000 miles on it, so I doubt its a 'worn part' sound.

Just because you only have 60k miles doesn't mean that everything should still be good.$h!t happens.
Back to the problem, have you checked your tranny fluid lately?

Ok I know there is fluid for the manual tranny, but I am not sure how to check it. I wouldn't suspect this as the problem becuase I would have hoped the mechanic that replaced the clutch would have checked this. I do know some fluid spilled out when he put the tranny back in the truck, but I would have though he may have topped that fluid off.

P.S.- the truck has 140,000 miles on it.
