Hi guys,

I am helping my son with his first vehicle. It is a 1992 Ranger that used to belong to my wife's uncle before he died. We bought a 1997 engine and transmission for it and I am trying to make it work in the 1992 Truck.

I am going to use the 1992 intake, so it will be easier to pass smog. I already ported the head to match the 1992 intake manifold.

The last (I hope) problem I am dealing with is the crank position sensor. It is a lot differnet between the 2 engines.

Does someone have a wiring diagram for these 2 engine years that they can share?

My thought is that I can rewire the sensors so that the 1992 computer can pick up the signal from the 1997 sensors.

Is it as simple as that or not?

Thanks for your help.

Brent

On the main page of this website are a bunch of tech diagrams that should help. The sensor should have changed much other than maybe placement. I would think ford used the same color wires even if they are moved around like they did with radios and everything else. But i have never worked on a 97 so I cant be sure about it.

Just to update...

We have determined that the 1997 engine will not work in the 1992 Ranger.

The computers between the 2 different years get the crank and cam position information in a different way that can't be easily made to work.

Thanks,
Brent

Correct, you would need to use the crank sensor and crank pulley from the 92 motor, which would mean making a template from the 92 motor and drilling and tapping the 97 motor to mount the 92 CPS on it.

For a direct bolt in find an 89-94 engine. Or better yet swap a turbo motor into it with the turbo computer...
