Dipstick vs Crankcase Volume

We have an '89 2.3 which is supposed to take 5 qt when oil and filter are changed. Putting 5 qt in only brings the dipstick level to the 1 qt low (bottom of crosshatch) mark.

Number on the dipstick is: E97E-6750-BC
Dealer has been unable to help. Would appreciate any thoughts.

If the correct volume is 5 qt and I put in 6 qt will it harm the engine -- maybe due to air entrapment from crank churning the oil?

If the correct volume is 6 qt and the level is permitted to go as low as 4 qt, will any problems result?

it's supposed to take 5qt, measure the length of your dipstick, I'm about to go put a new voltage regulator on my truck so I'll take a tape measure with me, I have the same pan so our dipsticks should be the same length. maybe someone put a different dipstick in yours at some point, I know mine is about to be completely worn out...

i bought a new(used) motor to put in my 94 2.3. the replacment was a 92. the dipstick was a different length. either dipstick would work with it's housing, but you couldn't take one dipstick and put it in the other housing and still get the correct reading. maybe someone replaced the dipstick at one time and put it in their stock housing. just incase you decide to change it, the whole thing just pulls stright out after you removed the bolt on the intake manifold.

i measured it, 26" from the top of the "hat" thing to the top of the cross hatched fill area...

I actually need a new dip stick, mine is TOAST, not sure how I wore one out...
