what does it mean if the diff. locks up in reverse some times and chatters? I opened the rear end and there isn't any shavings or broken teeth. Is this an adjustment problem or pinion bearings or ????

Loose companion-flange/pinion nut
Bad front pinion bearing.
IF you get a funny "chunking" or "chuckling" sound when you engine brake
at highway speed that confirms the problem, but locking up in reverse is
a pretty dire symptom.
