I have a 93 4wd ranger with the A4ld tranny. Does anyone know if all A4ld trannys will work in this vehicle. By all I mean out of a 2wd ranger or explorer etc. Are there any modifications which will need to be made for this to fit in the 93 ranger ?
thanks

I'm pretty sure there is a difference between the 2 and 4 wheel drive A4LDs and only certain engine sizes match up also.

The 2WD and 4WD transmissions are different. Difference being in the tail shaft length. they are not interchangeable unless you change the output shaft. The transmissions are also different between 2.9 and 4.0, if you put a 2.9 A4LD transmission behind a 4.0. your gonna tear it up inside. It will not last. Another difference is the stall rpm and flash rpm. Not too sure of the difference there, but that's also different.

besides other minor differences internally, the main casing is much the same. Unless you know what your looking for, it's hard to tell the difference. Some of the differences are pump housing... valve body... bell housing. Your best bet is to get one for your make and model type of truck.
I hope the link above helps you out.

Again thanks for the information. It really helps when others take the time to answer questions.
