Ok so shifting out of second gear and i here a pop, then after that, any time that the engine isnt driving the wheels, (i.e. clutch in, coasting) i hear a rattling sound. its on a 94 4x4 ranger 4.0l. I was told it was a throw out bearing, but now im being told its in the tranny and suspected to be the input shaft gear. Please someone help me out what is this??
Thanks.
Also calling around i found a 94 4cyl tranny and i think according to the tech section that tranny and mine are both M50d-r1 transmissions, can someone tell me if im wrong and if that will fit my truck?

The 4cylinder transmission is indeed the same model of transmission, however on the M5OD-R1 the bellhousing is NOT removable (it and the case are one casting)
and the bellhousing pattern on the 4cyl engine is different, VERY different.

And to be honest it sounds like you snapped off the input shaft.

I forgot to mention it will still drive. Ok so what would be the newest year, make etc. transmission i could put in. Obviously i would rather get like a 97 instead of another older 94 tranny. Or could mine be rebuilt or is it just not worth it?

Actually up to 2000 will work, but you'll need to get the shift lever with it if you get one newer than 1998 (the lever is "keyed" differently the way it mounts to the shift "stub" on the transmission.)
