auto tranny question

well my a4ld in my 87 Bronco 2 4x4 will not shift into overdrive, and when you down shift it using the shifter it doesn't stay in gear, it will go to that gear but as soon as you let out of the gas it goes into neutral but you can give gas and it will rev up to the rpm's you should be at and and start pulling as usual im puzzled could this be the governor that i read about or is just time for my tranny to die?

Not sure what causes that but that is how my 3rd one died. Did like that for a day and then one more push of the gas and something inside made a nice loud BAM! Then it wouldn't move at all.
