OK so the trans is in, driveline is all buttoned up, got the 4.0 starter in. I followed the tech section on 4.0 clutch swap for the starter wiring. So I ran a new cable from the batt. to the starter, then a wire from the batt. to the accessory side of the solenoid, then a wire from the ignition side of the solenoid to the starter solenoid. Then I clipped the 5 prong "cannon style" plug from underneath the truck that went to the A4LD and I spliced the red/blue stripe and Red/white stripe wires together. When I turn the key the lights come on, the fuel pump cycles but no starty what have I done wrong and is there a way to tst and see what area i mucked up? Can I jump post on the solenoid or starter or have i spliced the wrong wires together from that "cannon style" plug. Thanks guys always appreciate the insite.

This is a wiring diagram for the starter.

I believe the issue he is having involves the safety mechanism that will only allow a Auto trans to start in P or N. I am not aware of what wires you need to cross to bypass that system. If you get a ECM from a truck with a manual trans you should not have these issues. I assume you did not hook up a clutch interlock assembly? If you did put a clutch interlock assembly in, Bypass it by connecting the 2 pink wires to eliminate that from your possible issues.

Thanks guys, I am gonna go thru and recheck my starter hook up today. I didn't hook up the clutch interlock switch yet I wanted to get it running to make sure everything was in working order before I did that.

The PCM has NOTHING to do with the starter Safety circuit.

The auto trans has a built-in neutral safety switch.
the manual trans doesn't.

the little sub harness that connects to the transmission on Gen2 and later trucks is different betweenthe auto and manual trans and the manual trans harness has a little loop of wire of one of the connectors.

Well I got it, I just had the wrong wires from the old A4LD twisted together, I twisted the Red w/blue stripe and the pink and she fired right up so now it runs and drives now I just need to fix the pesk rusted off spring hanger and body mounts. Gotta love the rust belt

Right. Two of the wires from the Five prong plug allow cranking as you discovered. Two others attach to the reverse switch on the trans to light the backup lights, and the fifth wire is ignored (I think that wire is for converter lockup).:icon_idea:

Right, in a few posts that came up in my search said that the two red wires got hooked together so thats where I started, I couldn't find a definent answer.
