Heater box?

I have a 90 Ranger xcab with the 2.9 and A/C, my question is. The black box that extends from the fire wall, what is in that? If the heater core is under the dash and the blower motor is to the passenger side. does that just house A/C B.S. I have seen other Rangers that year with just a small flatish black cover. Ideally I would like to remove it so I can run my snorkel up through the cowl, how it sits now(out the fender) seems like the trees are just attracted to it.

the part that protrudes into the engine compartment houses your a/c evaporator. you cant remove it without rendering your a/c useless.

Right, That was my thought. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't cause problems with the heating situation.

nope, you had it nailed in your first post. your heater core is inside the truck, under the dash. and the blower motor is in the corner of the engine compartment. those are the only two components you need to make heat.

Yeah, but if you want to be able to MOVE the heat you need some sort of box up there.

The "small flattish" box is an air duct.

The blower sucks air from either the cowl (normally)
or from the cab (on recirculation)

then blows it across through that box and into the cab.
where it goes through the firewall into the inside heater box where it is either forced through the heater core, OR simply distributed while bypassing the heater core.

ya, sorry if i wasnt clear. you cant just saws-all the evaporator housing off and leave it. you would have to patch over the hole when done to function.
