I've got a '95 ranger with a bad camshaft position sensor. Its been a nightmare trying to find the part! I need the whole synchro assembly and Ford wants $490!! AM-Autoparts has one for $290 but, out-of-stock.

Does anyone know where I can find one? any help is much appreciated.

Almost!!

$300 not bad, but I think this one is the other kind. The one I have/need doesn't have the detachable sensor.

Thanks for the pointer tho, I'll search E-Bay motors when I get home.

Are you sure it's cam position sensor.

I had that code on mine, after I bought one (almost pos. it was rock auto) a couple years ago, I found out that the key (pin) in the camshaft pulley had sheared and the pulley had spun on the cam, so the computer thought the cam position sensor was bad.

you don't need the special tool, unless it comes with the sensor
Somewhere I have pics of the sensor installed and how it should be set - if yours has the little glass window on top like mine did. mines a 95 too so should be same.

I had to replace mine and it was the sensore shown above from the ebay link but I lucked out and got one for $30 new oem ford that was listed for a 95 aerostar off of ebay.

what does that sensor do exactly?

it tells the computer what position the camshaft is in so the ignition timing can match the stroke of the piston.

It's in back of the motor on mine and it looks like the bottom half of a distributor, its driven by the cam like a distributor would. but since the 4.0 is "distributorless", all it does is send a signal to the computer.

without it, the computer wouldn't know when to send a spark to each cylinder.
