The 4.0 OHV v6 was used in the '90-'00 Rangers. It was standard equipment in the Explorers from '91-'97.
The 4.0 SOHC v6 was used in the '99-current Rangers. It was also an option in the '97 Explorer and standard equipment in the '98+ Explorers.

Alright cool, is what I figured as the plug gap measurement on the engine panel matched up with the pushrod in the manual. Sweet now I know, thanks
Probably a dumb question and could most likely be answered with a little research but what is the difference between the pushrod ohv(over head valve? Double cams?) and the sohc. What exactly is a pushrod?

The OHV has 1 cam shaft with pushrods going to each cylinder head where the SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) has a cam shaft per cylinder head.

I thought the 4.0L SOHC engine first showed up in the Ranger in 2001.
The 4.0L SOHC engine does have two cams (one for each cylinder head) and it does not have pushrods like the OHV engines. Without pushrods in the way it allows better port design (intake and exhaust) to provide better flow. It also simplifies the valve train but adds complexity to the cam drive.

I think it was an option in the late '99, early '00 Rangers.
