What Year 4.0 Engines Will Fit As "bolt On" In My 2.9 Bronco Ii?i See They Still Make 4.0 Engines But My Truck Is A 1989!

Mine Has A Lifter Tick And I Am About To Replace The Engine, but Before I Buy The Wrong One,i Need A Little Advise From The Profesionals Out There!

Any will technically be just as much of a bolt in, but the earlier (90-95 I think) are easier to wire up from my understanding. Also I think most people prefer these early SOHC motors to the later DOHCs, although the 4.0s switched back to SOHC sometime.

A 91-94 Explorer would be a great parts car to buy, then you have access to everything you need and you can even swap in the axles.

BTW, lifter tick on 2.9s isn't uncommon. If fact, it seems to be kind of expected.

The only "Bolt in" is if you have a 1990 B2 with a 1990 Ranger 4.0L and harness.

With an 89 you will need to do some splicing, Not alot but some. and you will need to splice the fuel line return if you can grab the front part of the fuel line from the 4.0L donor.
