I have a 99 3.0 4x4 5spd. I think its the model after production change in 99 if that matters. Im just curious what gears came stock. I would like to put some 3.73 or 4.10. also how can i tell what axle I have and size? thanks

On your vehicle tag (drivers side door area) it should say the axle code. It usually is a Letter followed by a number, or two letters.

That 's your axle code, I haven't seen a axle code list on this site so go here.

That's what I use whenever I look for an axle.

Another thing, if you swap your rear gears make sure you do the front to match as well. Never do just one or you will ruin your truck.

You should also be able to find a metal tag on your differential cover that'll tell you in the lower left corner what gear ratio you have and whether it's a limited slip or open differential.

If it is still there. Mines long gone.

I'd stick with the door tag.

Agreed on the if it's still there part, but if your gears or axles have ever been changed out, the door tag will be incorrect.

The axle id page should help you out for what axle you have. The only sure way to tell gear ratio is to count the ring gear and pinion gear teeth, then divide the ring gear by the pinion. RG/pinion=Ratio :icon_thumby:

True, but he asked what the stock gears would be.

My first Ranger was the exact same truck and driveline and it came with 3.73 gears. If it is a Sport or Off-Road (mine wasn't) it may have 4.10's because they came with bigger tires.

I was wondering where that was. I looked, but I couldn't find it.

It's also in the FAQ that's right at the top here
