what type of bolt goes into the head that holds the trans dipstick tube inplace is it just a standard 3/8 bolt

No it's a standard 10mm Metric bolt (1mmx1.5 about 20mm long)

i fount out it goes into the tranny bell housing also the head accepts a 3/8 bolt

you are kidding right?
Trust me it's a 10mm.
why is it a 10mm? because your 4.0 is made in Germany.
The 2.9 had a couple of english threaded holes, related to the
alternator bracket... but the same bolts on a 4.0 are metric.
