To port or not?

I have been thinking of porting my box but would like some advice on if its worth it or not and if so where? My box is 3.8 cub. ft. with 2 JL Audio 12w3v3-2 pushed by Hifonics Brutus BXi1208D. The subs face the back of the seats. What if any would be the advantage of porting it and if so where should I place the ports?

i know the advantage to having a ported box is you get better sound quality.

JL says for a ported box it is recommended that you have 1.75 cu. ft. / 49.6 liters for one of your subs. i'm assuming that your box is big enough to add a port, but one of the audio gurus will have to confirm that

Sealed=SQ, Ported=SPL. if you like your ears to bleed you can look into porting, I'd leave it.

you can use a program called winisd. it allows you to model up your subs in different enclosures.

flyingbrick, im pretty sure you got those mixed up

ported: SQ

sealed: SPL

sealed or ported, doesn't make your sub louder, the DB rating is still there, but you increase its duration. but you really have to run the numbers, you sealed box might be too small to effectively port.

if your going from a sealed box to a ported box there will be a decibel increase. thats assuming nothing else changed. im not saying its going to be significant, but there will be an increase.

he might be able to get away with adding some polyfill and adding a external port.

Then how come my ported box sounds so much better at higher volumes than the sealed box i had my sub in?

And the sub it's self can make a difference too, I'll admit i have seen/heard subs sound "better" in a ported box over sealed. (And note i said "better" not clearer.)

According to JL i only need 2.5 sealed and 3.5 ported for the pair so I have more than enuff box with 3.8 for either one I think. Just trying to decide if I should try porting it or not. And if so where should the ports be placed.

what are the dimensions of your current box? what size mdf was used to construct? is each sub in its own sealed chamber? and what does jl recomend tuning it to if you go ported?

14h x 14d x 42w out of 5/8 mdf all one box not divided. JL says to tune it at 30Hz and thats at 1.75 cub. ft. per sub.
