How do you change an oil pan?

I know I will probably have to unbolt the engine and lift it up a bit to get the pan in there, but as to everything else involved I have no clue.

the exhaust will have to come off too id imagine. You might as well just pull it and be done so you actually have some room to work on it.

Hmm.. I've heard that you can easily wiggle it in by unbolting the engine and propping it up a couple inches. Can't remember who said that though.

If I pulled it completely I'd be afraid that I wouldn't get it back in properly. Haha.

a friend of mine did it on a 2.9 bronco 2 a while back, said he had to take the intake and distributor cap off to keep it from smacking the firewall when he lifted the engine. as far as the rear main is concerned im not sure if you have to pull the tranny (ive never done any just giving you notes from what ive been reading around and what ive heard here and there from ppl that have done it) but its a good bit of work to say the least.

I'm in the process of replacing my trans, and I can tell you that, you will definitely have to pull the trans back at least. This my friend is no easy task with the Y-Pipe still in place, even with a 3.0.. It will require you to use a decent amount of force. From the looks of it, you can unbolt the pan with the engine in there. However, unbolting the oil pump from the block, while you have a couple inches to get your hand in there is going to be a PITA.... It's best to pull the engine out... Least amount of work.

Motor mounts, disconnect trans. Disconnect the y-pipes. I would cut the studs out personally. It will seperate from exhaust manifold. The bolts are probably original, and I wouldnt even THINK about trying to remove them unless you had a strong air impact wrench, and some heat. Disconnect the catalytic converter where you see the spring loaded fasteners on it. The Y-pipe will drop out with the cats, giving you sufficient room to disconnect trans. Radiator hoses, and you could pull the radiator out for a little bit of room. Battery cables of course, and some sensors... Also, disconnect any incoming fuel lines. and, you might have to remove the pitman arm? from the suspension. Basically strip anything you can off the engine to make it easier.

A lot. If you need a guide, a factory shop manual would make things a lot simpler. They probably have even have a guide for exactly what you're trying to do. My Tempo manual was very helpful when it came to changing the harmonic balancer (required dropping the engine down and pulling it out through the wheel well), worth every penny I spent on it.
