i recently upgraded my serpentine belt to a goodyear gatorback and noticed when installing it that my power steering pump pulley does not spin freely like all the other pulleys. it was making a squealing noise before so i figured it was the belt (needed replaced anyway). now i'm thinking it is this pulley. my question is can i just replace the pulley or do i need a whole new pump? it still holds fluid and the steering still functions properly. thanks for any info...

The pulley doesn't spin freeley, it spins the pump. If its squeeling then the pump will need to be replaced.

so is the pulley supposed to spin by hand at all?

Yes, you should be able to rotate the PS pump pulley by hand, but you are turning the pump.

You need a puller to get the pulley off the shaft. All that allen head does is hold the shaft, there is no keyway or any threads involved. I don't know if that pulley is available seperately from the pump.

If you have a typical Ford noisy pump with the engine running, try sucking out the old ATF from the reservoir and use Synthetic ATF in it. Repeat suck/refill every few days until you've used a whole quart of ATF. Worked great on mine, knock wood.

If that doesn't work, a lot of people have success quieting Ford pumps by adding Limited Slip Differential Friction Modifier. Don't use the whole 4 oz. bottle at once!
