Badd probs need some help

my dad has a 94 4.0 ford ranger that the head gasket was blown....Him and a friend changed the head gaskets and put the motor back together and tried to start the motor..when i started the motor was smoking ad white/blue smoke was coming out of the tail pipe and the oil cap.
 
It was probably cracked heads not a head gasket.

Classic head gasket failure of a headgasket on 4.0 is primarily
a '93-94 Ranger Explorer (also 1995 on Aerostars) and is an
OVERBOARD leak between the head and block deck at the
rear of the passenger side head.
