Reducing air space

I built my sub box with more than enuff air space, 3.8 cubic ft. I am interested in finding something to put in the box to take up some air space to play with the sounds of it but not real sure what would work. I know of several things I could use but would like to find something that will work and if sounds better I can leave in the box. Something I can put in thru a 12 inch sub hole. Rather not spend alot of money buying more wood and carpet to make another box just yet. Any ideas? :icon_confused:

you say more then enuff, did you look at the min and max vol. for that sub before you built it. if its really over kill, you can layer sheets of MDF. togeher to make "bricks" and fit them in the hole and mount them inside the box
 
Build smaller boxes from the same material you made the sub box from. Just make sure they can fit in the hole.

Is this box sealed or ported?

depending on how you built it, if it has a needed shape, or not and how well you built it, you can unscrew a side and move it ward. then fix the carpet.
 
JL paper work says 1.25 per sub sealed is ideal, I made a box for a friend with the same subs at 3.3 for a pair and it sounds great(also in an extened cab truck). I made mine a little larger thinking of filling it to tune but still have not decided on what to use. The box is made to stay together, screwed and liquid nail. Had no intentions of taking it apart. Just thought I would play with the airspace in the box to see how it would sound, kinda like porting and playing with port lengths to get the best sound in a vehicle. Well not really but it will adjust the sounds of the box some what to tune it more for a vehicle.
 
what kinda sound do you have now and what are you looking to get
 
It sounds alot like 1 12 in 4 cubic feet. I am trying to tighten it up some without getting too tight. The happy medium between boomy and tight. :icon_thumby:

the technical term for that is open air res. if you ever wanted to know.

and i dont know what your box looks like but i would make MDF bricks and put them in the back corners, something like 5x8 and start stacking them up in till thew fill in your space you need then when you have it were you like it pull them apart and glue and screw them so they become semi solid.
 
what u need is easy to find and some what cheap. Go to a fabric store and buy pillow stuffing start small and go from there. i had the same set up you do only mine was ported down firing if u do everything right those 12s will rock your world and the person in the car next to you.
 
I find people usually have the opposite problem of not enough room. Use the old carpentry skills dude.
 
In the past I have had the opposite problem too, but for the first time I went too big lol. Usually I wind up measuring and building then building another making it bigger. Thanks for the input guys. I will give it a shot real soon and let ya know how it turns out.

Update: I went to Walmart and bought a cheap pillow and stuffed in the box. Works great, give me a good tight punch for my rock music but still a good low rumble when I throw in some rap to show off. :icon_hornsup:
