I have a 1994 Ranger 4x4 w/ 3.0L that has an engine problem.
I can buy a used low mileage engine of the same year, but they said it came from a 2 wheel drive.
Other than maybe the oil pan, are these motors the same, and can I easily swap?
Or are they different and not interchangeable?

Please let me know ASAP so that I can buy it before it's gone, only if it is useable in my Ranger.

Thanks,

David C.

Just to add to the public Ranger database, what are the particulars and PRICE of your new "pre-owned" motor?

Thanks in advance...

PS: If FoMoCo REALLY liked us, they'd put the 3.3L stroker kit in the 4WD Rangers, LOL!

Here is interchangeability info I got from a Hollander salvage interchange.

RANGER 1993-94 6cyl-183 (3.0L, VIN U), 4x4

Compare oil pans and front engine accessories before interchanging.
WARNING: Electrical & induction systems vary, compare and switch as necessary.
4x4.
|A|, |B|, |E| & |F| fit by switching attaching parts. CONSIDER LABOR COSTS BEFORE CONVERTING BETWEEN FWD & RWD.
|C| fits by switching upper intake & left exhaust manifold, oil pan & pickup tube, valve covers, fuel lines, timing cover & distributor.
|D| fits; difference is oil pan.

To fit in a 4x4 a 3.0 liter engine MUST have a 1993-up oil pan.

The early 3.0 pan is NOT clearanced to prevent HARD interference
between the pan and the axle pivot bracket for the passenger side beam
on a 4x4 truck.

The pan CAN be swapped over, but check it for rust before doing so.

I Bought the motor

I picked up the motor from a 1994 2wd, and is going into my 1994 4x4. The oil pans are exactly the same, as well as all sensors and such, (as far as I can see). Both motor mounts on the 2wd engine are different than my 4x4, so I'll use mine. I have both motors on engine stands next to each other to make it easier for parts swap, and so far I've found that all sensors and connections, etc. are the same on both motors. The 2wd motor I picked up had clutch/flywheel assembly still attached, but I'm using the one from my 4x4 motor because I'm not sure if they're exactly the same, or not.
I picked this motor up at a place called "Just Trucks & Vans" in Phoenix, AZ. It cost me $498.00 including tax & 1 year warranty.

One question.... when I put the motor back into my truck, should I put the Pilot Bearing on the tranny shaft, or in the back of the engine. Which way would be the most correct, and easiest?
I did not remove the trans. It is still all mounted in the truck.
Any feedback would be appreciated.
Thanks,
