Has the transmission been rebuilt recently? I had this problem when the mechanic placed the fifth/reverse shift collar backwards when we rebuilt a few weeks ago.

same thing in mine but it wouldn't even stay in 5th

not on an M5OD, but I had a Datsun that popped out of fifth due to a loose countershaft nut. Took off the tail housing to find the nut less than finger tight, only kept from being spun off by being staked onto the shaft. Since the nut couldn't move I can only assume it was due to wear in the thrust washers reducing the preload, which allowed enough slack for the synchro collar to not quite be able to reach all the way into 5th.

Just an idea.

thanks for the replies guys.no rebuild while i have had this truck.trans has worked fine since i bought it.the shifter lever does rock aft when accelerating and forward when letting off throttle(with foot off clutch pedal in both cases).

some movement is normal with the transmission and engine being rubber mounted, though that movement is usually side to side, not back and forth. Not sure what would cause that.
