Hey guys, my truck had a mysterious failure a week ago, it lately has been taking longer to start, well then finally died while goin on a hiking/picnic trip.
Well it just kinda stopped suddenly, no missing or hesitation at all, then immediately I restarted it, it idled fine for a second I revved it up, then it sputtered out and died. Well I got it towed home, started it right up, drove it around my driveway, no failures at all. I put my fuel injection gauge on it, and it stayed around 54 psi, continuously, when I shut it off, it dropped very slowly down to around just above zero.
I didnt dare drive the truck anywhere, but I pulled codes, which showed none at all, I just did a few months back a major tune up on it, that was like 3000 miles ago, it was running excellent. I was thinking this was the fuel pump so I ordered one from RETECH. They rebuild fuel pumps I guess and sell them inexpensive. It was a close match except I had to reuse my fuel sender from the original assy. as it was slightly different than the retech's was.
But anyway, upon doing this I noticed that the sock under the original fuel pump was more like the thickness of one of those soap filled brillo pads and full of stuff, you couldnt even see light thru it using my 500 watt spotlight. The new one on the retech is flat and clear white and thin. Anyone else encounter this? The tank itself looks to be clean inside and the fuel filter I replaced 3000 miles ago. I hope I got it, but anyone with any advice on this please write as I sure dont want to have to use my Triple A towing again if I can prevent it. Im thinking it had to be my pump.

It is just a different "sock" as you call it. But I sugest you also change the fuel filter and pressure regulator unit (Your truck may have it integrated in the fuel filter).
