Hi guys I have an 88 4x4 with the A4LD every thing was going great with the truck until about a month ago. The tranny started dropping out of od on the highway but now it very rarely goes into od and when it does it will start shifting in and out of od until I shift into drive to stop it. My question is. Is this a common thing and is there an easy fix for it? And the tranny is full but the fluid is a grayish color. Do I need to replace/rebuild? other than the od it shifts fine and does not slip at all. If I do need to replace/rebuild does any one know where I can get a replacement or a rebuild kit? money is a little tight right now so I need to do this as inexpensivly as I can. Thanks in advance.

Your cheapest alternative is to forget OD and leave it in drive. Next is to change the trans fluid and see if things improve. Next cheapest is to locate a good used trans (about $300) to have on hand when the A4LD gives it up completely.

If money is tight a rebuild is the wrong direction to go,especially if you are not familiar with doing one. Personally, I would change the fluid and drive it without OD and worry about replacement when it pukes out completely.:icon_thumby:

It all depends on whats causing the failure of OD...OD is controled by computer in which there is a solenoid in the valve body...now sevral things can cause no OD...throttle positioning sensor, computer, speed sensor or solenoid not working or it could be an internal failure.
