i got a code 41 and a 88 while doing a diagnostic using the CEL. I HAVE checked the tech library and code 41 does not apply to the cel test and 88 is a combination of like 5 different things.

how does 41 not apply to a self test? the truck either is or was at some point running lean.

for code 88, you dont have a choke or carb...so we can rule out choke relay or throttle kicker. rangers dont have e-fans so its not that. so its either a transmission code or a spout connector code. if you have a 5 speed then that narrows that down.

My credo
Toonces drives a Ranger . . . . just not very well.
The diagnostic codes can vary somewhat according to year, and driveline application. This has tripped me up before.

I've got the Ford 1991 Engine/Emissions Diagnostic manual; for the truck 2.3L engine it lists a code 88 as "Loss of Dual Plug Input control". And, it does list the code 41 as "HEGO sensor circuit indicates system lean".

The 88 is shown as a continuous memory code (KOEO), and 41 as an engine running code (KOER).

Hope this helps, and good luck.
